and with plex dash you can see how your pc is going even when you are not at homeįor instance this is the dashboard on the "server" pc (you can see this without paying for plex dash), the blue is when you are away from your home network (the line will be yellow when you are at home) (streaming to my mobile with my mobile using mobile data, i also have plex setup quite aggressivly so it will do a big chunk when a stream starts and slowly trickle feed the rest to the client as the file is being watched, without that it sometimes buffers a bit when you are away from your home network home) I also pay for plex pass which gives me access to the plex dash and managed users, so everyone in the household can have a different user and you as the "manager" can see what everyone is watching and it keeps track of where they are up to in the files and it is seperate for each person. I also want to keep track of status when i watch movies on my Intel Nuc and Nvidia Shield, Emby helps out with that tooĭo you have media across both pc's?, because if all the media is on one pc having plex would probably make it a lot simpler for you as its just one server and a bunch of clients, so when plex updates the library then is pushed to all of the clients that are signed in So less user involvement and it happens pretty quickly. When you add a mvoie/episode to your library, Emby just picks it up and adds it to Kodi. I've been running Emby and Kodi in combination for about 9 months or so, and i just like the fact that you don't have to scan your library in Kodi. Multiple reasons, but i'm not sure any of them are really good I know i could always rip my DVD's again but that's a lot of workĬan i ask exactly what your budget may be in the future? I have a backup of the movies spread out over 2 x 2TB HDs.

Just wondering if anybody here would have some useful input!Īt the moment i have a 4TB HD for all my movies and a 4TB HD for TV Series, the other HD's are mainly spares or backups. I like to tinker and have plenty of time to learn, but i also want to be sensible and not run more stuff than i really need. do i look into a DAS or would it just be simpler to buy an synology NAS and call it a day? If i would have some money to spend, how can i make this setup better if i want to stick with my Intel Nuc. If i change my OS and go with something like Unraid or OMV what would be the advantages/downsides? How would you set this up in the most efficient wat? If i go with Unraid or OMV will this work well with my external HD's? With taking care of redundancy, what would my write speeds be? right now copying from an internal HD to one of the external WD HD's is between 70 and 100MB/s.

If i stick with windows is there a good backup solution for backing up my movies once a month? OR should i turn my Intel NUC into a NAS with external HD's for now so i have some sort of redundancy that way? Now, am i overthinking this all and should i just stick with what i have and just backup my movies and tv shows once a month to other external HD's.

I can find guides on how to do things online. I'm not after a completely guided setup, but more general ideas on how to move forward. I'm comfortable with dealing with Windows, but i'm willing to learn other OS's. What i'm after is some sensible information on how to make my setup better, more efficient. I know i could always rip my DVD's again but that's a lot of work :) The main idea for this pc is to run as a "server" for media for my tv and i have a spare Nvidia Shiled TV to hook up to another tv in the house.Īt the moment i have a 4TB HD for all my movies and a 4TB HD for TV Series, the other HD's are mainly spares or backups. My current setup is an Intel NUC Gen 7 with a Core i3 processor and 16GB of RAM, a powered USB3 Hub, 3x 4GB WD Passport HD's and 4x 2TB WD Elements HD's.Īll of this is connected to my TV and I'm running Windows 10Pro, Emby, Sonarr, Radarr and Kodi on it. I am still interested in getting some tips on hardware for the future though to make my setup better. I have no money to expand on hardware at the moment, i could be persuaded to buy a new OS if need be. After watching hours of LTT youtube videos, this seemed like the right place to do! But long story short i want some sort of backup/redundancy for my movie/tv library, and i was hoping to get some useful tips from this community. Not sure what i'm after, maybe encouragement to change or re-enforcement that i'm on the right path. I'm a long time tech enthusiast with way to much time on his hands during these corona times.
